If you’re looking to dive into the delicious world of Procreate watercolor illustration, you’ve landed in the right spot! And hey, if you’re hungry for even more Procreate goodness, pop over to my Patreon! You’ll find a treasure trove of goodies to help you level up your skills – think brushes, color palettes, drawing templates, and all sorts of tips and tricks. My Patreon members get exclusive access to the watercolor paper texture (PNG/JPEG) and the yummy watermelon color palette we’ll be using, plus the exact watermelon brushset I use in this tutorial, but feel free to use your own or Procreate’s standard watercolor and gouache brushes if you prefer. It’s your artistic journey! 😉
But for now, let’s get started on this juicy Procreate Watercolor watermelon tutorial! This is a simple project that’s perfect for watercolor art beginners, but even seasoned artists might pick up a new trick or two.
Here’s the breakdown of how we’ll bring this juicy fruit to life on your iPad:
Getting Started: Procreate Digital Watercolor Setup
- Canvas: Grab a square canvas in Procreate. I’m working with 3000 by 3000 pixels, just a personal preference!
- Watercolor Texture: Now, for that lovely watercolor art on Procreate vibe, add a watercolor texture PNG or JPEG. My Patreon members can grab the one I’m using, but feel free to experiment with your own! If you’re looking for some inspiration, check out my post on Watercolor Backgrounds.
- Brushes: You’ll need a watercolor medium wash brush and a watercolor wet brush for this tutorial. I have a set that’s perfect for this in my Patreon stash if you’re interested. If not, the standard Procreate watercolor and gouache brushes will work too. And hey, if you’re curious about other brush options, take a peek at my article on Flower Brush Procreate.
- Watermelon Color Palette: Get those yummy watermelon colors ready! We’re talking reds, greens, grays, and a bit of white for those juicy highlights. My Patreon members will find this palette in their exclusive resources. Don’t forget to explore my other blog post about Color Palettes for Procreate for more ideas.
Step-by-Step Procreate Watercolor Watermelon Tutorial
- Sketch the Rind: On a new layer, use that medium wash brush and a medium green to sketch out the watermelon rind. It’s okay if it’s rough for now.
- Paint the Rind: Fill in your rind with the same brush and color. Layer on darker greens to get those rind details. Don’t be afraid to smudge and blend for that natural watercolor art effect!
- Seed Time: Make a new layer for those little black teardrops. Use the wet brush and a medium gray for the seeds, then go darker for some shading.
- The Juicy Flesh: Another new layer for the best part – the flesh! Medium wash brush, vibrant red, and let’s paint! Layer on a darker red and smudge it all together for a juicy look.
- Highlights: A little white on the wet brush will create those fresh highlights on a new layer.
- Grounded Shadow: Underneath the watermelon, add an oval shadow with the wet brush and a soft gray. Darken it near the rind and blend for depth.
- Splatterific Fun (Optional): If you’re feeling adventurous, grab some fun colors and splatter them around with the splash brush! It’s a little chaotic, but it’s watercolor illustration after all.
And that’s a wrap! You’ve just painted a digital watercolor masterpiece. If you’re loving this process, I’ve got a whole world of Procreate tutorials waiting for you on my channel and on Patreon.
